Fund Comparison

We recommend the PowerShares International Dividend Achievers (PID) fund compared with the other funds in this category.  It has superior recent performance, and we expect that international investments will continue to return more than the U.S. (see our international category for more details).  We also like its lower price to earnings ratio even though it is relatively concentrated with 60+ holdings.

The iShares Dow Jones Select Dividend Index fund (DVY) also focuses on high dividend paying companies.  Financials, utilities, and staples make up the majority of its holdings, and it has decent diversification.  However, its returns have trailed most of the other funds in this category.

The PowerShares High Yield Equity Dividend Achievers (PEY) fund is the lowest returning fund in this sector so we don't recommend it.

The remaining two funds from PowerShares were introduced last fall.  The PowerShares High Growth Rate Dividend Achievers Portfolio (PHJ) and PowerShares  Dividend Achievers Portfolio (PFM) have an average performance record.

We will wait for a longer performance record for the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation VIPERs (VIG) and two new WisdomTree funds.
